REALIZING YOUR DREAM FOR THE FUTURE OF ELKHART COUNTY

Our mission is to improve the quality of life in Elkhart County by inspiring generosity. We can advise you on how your gift can have the largest and long-term impact.

A cash gift is the simplest way to establish a fund or give to an existing fund. Cash gifts are fully deductible up to 50 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income in any one year. Make checks payable to the Community Foundation of Elkhart County and note the name of the fund you are donating to in the memo line. The mailing address is P.O. Box 3048, Elkhart, IN 46515. Give online via our online giving portal.

Gifts of appreciated securities (stock, bonds and most mutual funds) also provide tax advantages. If you have held the securities for one year or longer, the current value generally is tax-deductible up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income, with a five-year carryover if the gift amount is more than the 30 percent limit.

Please notify us that the stock or wire transfer has been requested and provide the name of the donor, the name of the security, and the number of shares transferred. Please contact a member of our Advancement team to help with your donation.

When you name the Community Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy, you receive an immediate tax deduction that usually approximates the cash surrender value of the policy. All premium payments made thereafter are deductible as a charitable contribution.

We can also accept gifts from an IRA rollover, closely-held stock, partnership interests, real estate and certain items of tangible property. Please contact a member of our Advancement team to help with your donation.

Your Giving

Often the greatest opportunities for giving occur when you are making other major business, personal and financial decisions. Those include writing or revising a will, considering a sale of real estate or other major assets, planning for retirement, or receiving an inheritance. We can help you maximize these financial opportunities for yourself, your heirs, and the charitable causes you care about most.

GIVE TO A SCHOLARSHIP GRANTING ORGANIZATION

The Indiana Tax Credit Scholarship program is now available for individuals or corporations who would like to donate to scholarship-granting organizations (SGO). The Community Foundation is pleased to be a qualified SGO and can receive private, charitable donations. These donations earmarked to one of our partnering private schools will provide K-12 tuition support to students with limited means. With this program, numerous families are empowered with new options in education.

A compelling feature of contributing to an SGO is contributions are eligible to receive a 50 percent state tax credit and are federally tax-deductible. The funds donated can then be distributed to partner schools for families that meet income and other requirements. While there are no limits on the size of qualifying contributions to an SGO, the entire tax credit program has a limit of $14 million for FY2019. This permits up to $28 million in donations and scholarships for FY2019.

A RANGE OF WAYS TO GIVE

The Community Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation and can accept any gift eligible for charitable donations for the purpose of the Scholarship Granting Organization. The minimum contribution to the Scholarship Granting organization is $100. A Donor Card must be attached to each contribution, excluding payments made online, in order to receive the Indiana State Tax Credit. Donations can include cash, checks, credit card, IRA-qualified charitable distributions and publicly traded securities (may include stocks, bonds, or mutual funds).

ASSETS MANAGED BY FUND TYPE

Since 1989, we have been working with passionate individuals, families, organizations, and businesses who are building a stronger community by supporting causes that strengthen and improve Elkhart County. Once we understand a donor's goals through giving and establish their intent, we work with them to decide on which funding option best brings their vision to life.

SELECTING AND MAKING A GIFT

When an individual, a couple or a family wish to establish a fund with the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, deciding on the level of active engagement is one of the first steps. Some donors choose to remain actively engaged in the annual grant-making decisions, while others prefer to establish an endowment to benefit a specific organization and maintain assets to help ensure the sustainability of the organization.
